HOT DOGS · IN THE FRIDGE

7 days

One week after you open the package. Sealed, they get two — USDA lists opened and unopened separately, and the gap is real rather than cautionary. Opening the vacuum seal is the event that starts the shorter clock.

These are quality windows drawn from published USDA food-safety guidance — an estimate of how long food stays good, not a safety date. If the package carries a printed use-by date, that date governs.

Near the end of the window?

Freeze them; one to two months. Hot dogs freeze and thaw about as well as any processed meat, which is to say the texture holds up because there was not much texture to lose.

The practical move is deciding at the moment you open the package, not on day six. A pack of eight opened on Sunday is a Sunday decision.

SOURCES

  1. FoodSafety.gov Cold Food Storage Chart, Hot dogs: "Opened package — 1 week refrigerated, 1 to 2 months frozen"; "Unopened package — 2 weeks refrigerated." The headline window is the opened package, the state most packages are in once you have started them.

Ranges are as published. Treat the short end as your real window — grocery produce is already days past harvest, and a cooked dish starts its clock at the stove.

Pip, the Savery squirrel, looking unimpressed

Looking up your groceries one at a time is a hobby. A bad one.

Savery scans your grocery receipt and tracks these windows for everything you bought at once. The spinach, the strawberries, the milk you forgot about — all on one shelf.
